How to Properly Care for your New Maltese
Royal Canin Mini Puppy Dry Food can be purchased at most major pet retailers, including amazon.com and PetSmart. This premium food may cost a bit more, but it’s truly worth it. After trying many brands, we’ve found that our puppies are healthier, have shinier coats, and eat better with Royal Canin. We strongly recommend it. We don’t support “all-natural” puppy foods, as young puppies need the added nutrients that Royal Canin provides.
Feeding Instructions:
- Keep food available 24 hours a day for the first few weeks.
- Do not feed only three times daily—tiny teacup puppies must eat throughout the day and evening.
- Because of their small size, they eat small amounts frequently—expect 5–6 small meals per day.
- Puppies should eat every 3 hours. It’s your responsibility to ensure they do.
- Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar from not eating or stress) is not covered by YorkieBabies.
- Replace food and water every 4 hours with fresh, purified bottled water.
- Do not switch food brands for at least 2 months, and when you do, transition gradually to avoid digestive upset.

Additional Feeding Items:
- Royal Canin Puppy Appetite – 6 cans
- Clear, unflavored Pedialyte
Hydration Mix (for the first 5 days after bringing your puppy home):
- ⅓ teaspoon clear Karo syrup
- ⅔ cup bottled purified water
- ⅓ cup clear Pedialyte
This mixture helps maintain your puppy’s blood sugar and hydration, especially after travel. If you picked up your puppy in person (no flight), Pedialyte isn’t necessary.
Playpen Training:
A pet playpen keeps your puppy safe while allowing room to move and explore. We recommend using it at night instead of a crate, as crates can be overused. Our playpen training method helps most puppies become trained within 2–3 weeks when followed correctly.
Harness (No Collars!):
Always use a harness for safety and comfort.
Nutri-Cal Supplement:
- Give once daily after eating for the first week.
- Continue once daily after eating for the second and third weeks.
- Always give after meals only—Nutri-Cal is a vitamin supplement, not a food substitute.
It provides essential nutrients and can also be used as a reward during training.
Temperature Guidelines:
- Keep your home no cooler than 74°F with air conditioning, or 72°F with heating.
- Avoid overhead fans, as drafts can cause colds.
- Treat your puppy’s comfort as you would a baby’s.
Activity and Rest:
Limit playtime to 15–20 minutes at a time, followed by 1–2 hours of rest in a children’s playpen. Puppies need frequent naps to stay healthy and happy.
Follow-Up:
All customers must call daily for the first 7 days after bringing their puppy home to update us on how the puppy is adjusting and eating. This helps ensure your YorkieBaby transitions smoothly into their new home.
